Getting a Domain Name

How will people reach your website?

They’ll need to have a web address to type in. This web address is called a “domain name.” Here are some famous domain names: www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, and www.myspace.com.

Go to www.register.com and see what’s available. Millions of domain names have already been scarfed up, so you may not be able to get exactly what you want, but you should be able to come up with something cool—there are billions of possibilities.

At www.register.com, you can purchase a domain name for $35. for a year. You can buy a domain name for multiple years and it will cost even less per year.

Yes, there are other places to register your domain name, and yes, they may be cheaper, but usually there's a catch. For instance, many web hosts will offer a domain name for free (see the "Signing Up for Website Hosting" section), BUT you can never move to a new web host if you want to keep the domain name. With register.com, you can host your site wherever you want.

Your domain name will be your web address. After you’ve created pages and set up your website hosting account, when someone types your domain name into his or her browser’s (Explorer’s) address box, the front page of your website will magically appear on his or her screen!

Get search-engine friendly

If someone searches for your website on Google or Yahoo, he won’t find it—it takes time for these guys to pick up your website. You can manually sign your website up with Google and Yahoo if you’re in a hurry to be on these big boy search engines, but it will happen naturally if your site is up for a while. (It will still take a few weeks to actually show up on Google and/or Yahoo even if you post it with them up front.)

Most folks don’t bother with this, but if you’re intent on selling or being seen on the web, then do it.

Here’s where to go to officially list your website with the big boys:

Google:
http://www.google.com/addurl/

Yahoo:
https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit.

It’s free!
